Martha Coffey Junior Development Project

Project Description

Development of the junior rowing program at the Argonaut Rowing Club, in honour of the memory of Martha Coffey. Members of the Argonaut Rowing Club and Ontario rowing community were shocked to learn recently of the untimely passing of Martha. Martha came to the sport of rowing later in life but had a passion for it that inspired all who saw her on the water each day. She particularly enjoyed directing this enthusiasm to young people and her encouragement and kindness touched so many. To see Martha was to know that determination and persistence make all things possible. Martha's family has asked that donations be made in honour of her memory to the Argonaut Rowing Club junior rowing program--a program that Martha supported so strongly.

The proceeds from this fundraising will be
used for the following cause(s):

Acquisition of rowing equipment, including racing shells, and/or funding of expenses of the junior rowing program at the Argonaut Rowing Club, as determined by a committee to be formed by the board of directors of the Argonaut Rowing Club.

How this project will assist in promoting
or developing amateur sport on a national

Support for the junior rowing program will enable the Argonaut Rowing Club to continue to develop athletes that represent Canada in international competition. The club has a long history of developing athletes that have represented Canada at both the junior and senior level, including many that have competed at the Olympics and Paralympics.
Over the past two years, the club’s junior rowing program has grown to approximately 50 rowers, which is the largest number of junior members at any time in the club’s history.  During those two years, two club members have represented Canada internationally at the junior level. That number is expected to increase in the near future, with some athletes potentially graduating to the Canadian national team at the senior level.
